2021 Hockey WineUp Finals
Two wines remain and the time has come to crown the inaugural 2021 Hockey WineUp Champion. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens will be fighting for more than just the Stanley Cup. It has been a fantastic year of wine and hockey.
Finals: Curvos Loureiro 2019 (Tampa Bay) vs. Domaine Lapierre, Morgon 2019 (Montreal)
Here is your 2021 Hockey WineUp Finals overview:
Tampa Bay Lightning: Curvos Loureiro 2019
The 2021 Hockey WineUp Team Pairing for the Tampa Bay Lightning is Curvos Loureiro 2019. After advancing to the second round, the Bolts acquired Vineyard 36 California Brut Rosé by beating the Carolina Hurricanes, this eliminated The King’s Storm Cabernet Franc. Curvos Loureiro gains a birth in the 2021 Hockey WineUp Finals as the result of the Lightning eliminating the New York Islanders. The Round 3 acquisition for Tampa was Gran Feudo Ediciòne Selecciòn especial 2017. Here is a review of Tampa’s 2021 Hockey WineUp for the Stanley Cup Finals:
- 2021 Team Pairing: Curvos Loureiro 2019
- Line Change: Gato Vinho Verde, Quinta Da Aveleda Vinho Verde
- Round 2 acquisition: Vineyard 36 California Brut Rosé
- Round 3 acquisition: Gran Feudo Ediciòne Selecciòn especial 2017
Montreal Canadiens: Domaine Lapierre, Morgon 2019
The Montreal Canadiens have embraced the underdog mentality and have proven to the world that they are legitimate. The past 30 years has seen Beaujolais doing the same which makes the 2021 Hockey WineUp Team Pairing for the Habs very relevant and significant. Was the Round 1 win over the Leafs because Tavares got injured in game 1? Was victory against Winnipeg because Scheifele was suspended? Doubts about the Habs were put to rest with their series victory against the Vegas Golden Knights. Here is Montreal’s 2021 Hockey WineUp for the Stanley Cup Finals:
- 2021 Team Pairing: Domaine Lapierre, Morgon 2019
- Line Change: Domaine de Côtes Rémont 2018, Vaucher Père & Fils Fleurie 2018
- Round 2 acquisition: Benjamin Bridge Méthode Classique Reserve Brut Sparkling 2012
- Round 3 acquisition: Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port
2021 Hockey WineUp Finals
Hockey WineUp is matching a wine with each game of the Stanley Cup Finals. The team that wins the game will acquire the wine as part of their official 2021 Hockey WineUp Roster. Here is your 2021 Hockey WineUp Stanley Cup pairings for each game, enjoy:
Game 1: Dopff au Moulin Cuvée Julien Brut Crémant d’Alsace
Monday June 28, 8:00pm ET
The NHL Stanley Cup Finals kicks off with game one and the two teams will be playing to add Dopff au Moulin Cuvée Julien Brut Crémant d’Alsace to their roster. Alsace may not be a wine region that you know, but let me tell you, these are some of the finest wines you’ll ever experience. Alsace is situated on the Rhine River in North Eastern France and is known for high quality Rieslings, Gewürztraminer, and Crémant (essentially Champaign made outside of the region of Champaign). This Crémant d’Alsace starts the playoffs off with some bubbles to celebrate the start of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Game 2: Château Terre Blanque 2018
Wednesday June 30, 8:00pm ET
Start your Canada day early with a glass or bottle of Château Terre Blanque 2018. This is a great introduction to the Right Bank of Bordeaux and captures the essence of classic Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blends and is less than $20.
Game 3: Cave Spring CSV Riesling 2018
Friday July 2, 8:00pm ET
Keep that Canada Day party going strong by enjoying a wonderful Ontario wine selection: Cave Spring CSV Riesling 2018. Step 1: Open this bottle 1 hour before game time and let it rest. Step 2: At 7:50 pm place the bottle in an ice bucket that has 50/50 mix of cold water and ice. Step 3: Just before puck drop pour yourself (and others) a 3-4.5 ounce glass and enjoy with the opening faceoff. Step 4: Try not to finish the bottle until at least the 3rd period… really, you’ll get more out of this wine by savouring each sip and keeping your consumption to 1.5-2 glasses per period.
Game 4: Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz 2018
Monday July 5, 8:00pm ET
One of the oldest hockey championship trophies comes from Australia. Enjoy Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals with a glass of Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz 2018. The wines from Australia may not have the prestige of old world countries like France and Italy, but the Barossa Valley is one of the regions that has been consistently producing quality world class wines over the past 30 years.
Game 5: Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Kabinett 2018
Wednesday July 7, 8:00pm ET
Things become a lot more complex from Game 5 onwards and so will your wine. Now is the time to introduce yourself to the taste and smell of the Mosel in Germany. Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Kabinett 2018 can be purchased for under $30 (a bargain for this region). Follow the steps from Game 3 to get the most out of your wine experience.
Game 6: Luccarelli Negroamaro Puglia IGT
Friday July 9, 8:00pm ET
If you know anything about Hockey WineUp, you know that Luccarelli Negroamaro is our house red wine. For $8.80 at the LCBO, this wine punches way above it’s weight in gold and can shut up naysayers without too much effort… Sounds a bit like the Montreal Canadiens if you ask me!
Game 7: Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Champagne 2010
Sunday July 11, 7:00pm ET
The only way for a franchise to acquire Champagne as part of their WineUp Roster is to win a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Champagne 2010 is the 2021 Hockey WineUp Game 7 wine selection. Only one team will be drinking champagne when all is said and done, but folks, you are in a position to be drinking it throughout the entire game!
Set yourself up right to enjoy this game by selecting any of the Wines that have been paired to the Tampa Bay Lightning or the Montreal Canadiens and make sure to have a bottle (or few) of Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Champagne 2010 on ice for puck drop!
