2023 Eastern Conference Round 2: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers

Bachelder Lowrey Vineyard Old Vines Pinot Noir 2020 (Toronto Maple Leafs)

VS.

Philippe De Rothschild Pinot Noir Pays d’Oc (Florida Panthers)

Tale of the Tape

Old World vs. New World – the Maple Leafs are one of the oldest and most storied franchises in the history of the NHL and are making a 2nd round appearance for the first time in 19 years. The Florida Panthers came into the league as part of the NHL’s early 1990s sunbelt expansion era – the Panthers have made the Stanley Cup finals once in the franchise history, however the were unable to pounce on the opportunity.

Hockey WineUp Prediction:

Hockey WineUp is choosing Bachelder Lowrey Vineyard Old Vines Pinot Noir 2020 to win the second round match up. The Pays d’Oc is a very approachable wine at a great price point, however the craftsmanship of Thomas Bachelder’s wine making results in stronger head to head performance.

Primarily from the 1993 planting. You smell the minerals first, then the fruit. Crunchy, slatey chalk leads before a marvellous, dreamy sheen of gorgeous raspberries and forest strawberries that is topped by slight hints of clove and dried cherries.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Country: France

Region: Pays d’Oc

Alcohol/Volume: 12.5%

From the winery:

Welcome to the world of French Pinot Noir. This is a very accessible wine at a great price from a historically significant and well storied wine brand – Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The wine region Pays d’Oc is nestled between the mountains and the Mediterranean in Southern France. The warmer climate will result in more prominent dark fruit flavours like plum and blueberry – also keep your taste buds aware of hints of chocolate. This is a warmer climate pinot noir for a warm climate hockey team and is best served at 55° F.
