Marynissen Estate Winery – 2021 Heritage Pinot Noir

Think back to the year 2021, it was another year of pandemic lockdowns and many of us felt we were trapped, but then came summer and fall and society opened up again.
This year the Calgary Flames are coming off of their own lockdown of sort with new coach Ryan Huska taking over from Darryl Sutter.
The 2021 Heritage Pinot Noir by Marynissen Estate Winery pairing is in celebration of this year’s Heritage Classic outdoor game where the Flames will take on their provincial rivals, the Oilers, at Common Wealth Stadium in Edmonton.
It is no coincidence that both the Flames and the Oilers are paired with a Heritage Collection wine from Marynissen Estate this year. These two teams are like brothers, both are heavily influenced by the geography, people, and culture of the province.
These similarities will extend to the bottles of wine to be enjoyed while watching each team this year. The Flames, 2021 Heritage Pinot Noir, and the Oilers, 2021 Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon, are like brothers – both influenced by geography, people, and culture of the sub-region Four Mile Creek in Niagara.
Hockey WineUp recommends to have a bottle of both the Flames 2021 Heritage Pinot Noir and the Oilers 2021 Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon open and ready to taste side by side on Sunday October 29 during the Heritage Classic outdoor game.

Wine Description
Deep notes of cherry, toasted cedar, and a hint of smoke on the nose. On the palate, dark cherry, smooth, medium-bodied with notes of vanilla and spice on the finish.
Hockey WineUp is a fan of Pinot Noir (every 2023 pairing was a pinot noir selection). Pinot Noir has the ability to capture the uniqueness of a specific geographic place, in wine terms, called Terroir. Terroir is effectively the essence of all the factors of the geography of the spot the vines have been grown and include the soil, climate, elevation, annual precipitation, impact of lakes, and really any other natural factor that can impact the fruit produced by the vines. Some people even include human intervention as part of Terroir (however this is hotly debated)
