Tampa Bay Lightning 2024 Team Pairing

Marynissen Estate 2021 HERITAGE COLLECTION PINOT NOIR ROSÉ

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been one of the top teams in the NHL for the past 5 years. This is a team that has built a culture of winning, but after a long run at the top this season might mark a bit of a rebuild. Although there is still a strong veteran presence on the team, the season is going to depend on some new faces and youth in hopes to get into the playoffs.

So what should you drink for a team that is at the start of a rebuild?

Marynissen Estates 2021 Pinot Noir Rosé Heritage Collection.

Why?

Because the evolution of wine from the mid-late 1800s and the evolution of hockey are remarkably similar and the Tampa Bay Lightning and Marynissen Estate are comparable in this regard. The expansion of the NHL in the early 1990s marks a 4th wave of hockey growth which evolved from the Original 6 hockey teams. Ontario Wines start to thrive at this period of time as well and in the early 1990s start to become internationally recognized.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is a team that now has a Heritage comparable to the Original 6 teams. Despite only being in the NHL since the early 1990s, the Lightning’s culture, atmosphere, fan base, and championship pedigree is amongst the best in NHL history.

The commercial wine scene in Ontario is young and Marynissen started selling their wine in 1991, around the same time the Tampa Bay Lightning had their inaugural season in 1992. Rosé is a very popular wine option today, however there was a time when the only real producers of rosé were in Provence, France – think of this like an Original 6 Team. Here’s the catch, when you pour a glass of Marynissen Estates 2021 Pinot Noir Rosé it will bring with it the essence of Rosé from Provence, the same way that watching the Tampa Bay Lightning captures the heritage of vintage hockey.

Wine Description

This barrel fermented Pinot Noir Rosé shows bright notes of cherries, raspberries, lemon-lime, and a hint of spices. Crisp and refreshing on the palate with red fruit and citrus flavours with a rich, balanced finish.

There is a uniqueness to this rosé because it is a wonderful example of the versatility of Pinot Noir. As part of the Heritage Collection, this wine is from the estate grown Pinot Noir grapes at Marynissen and will be a great option for developing your Ontario VQA Rosé palate.

This wine is a safe bet to start or finish the night and can be paired with almost anything you are planning on serving while watching the Tampa Bay Lightning. The higher alcohol content results in the wine being more dry allowing it to provide complexity to acidic dishes. You will be able to capture the vibe of being in Tampa if you decide to fire up your bbq and grill some Trout, Grouper, or Mackerel.
